In the presence of the Minister Maxime Prévot, Vice-President of the Government of Wallonia and Minister of Public Works, the first section of the new urban boulevard of the city of Seraing was inaugurated this Wednesday, September 9th, 2015.
The Minister, accompanied by the Mayor of the city Alain Mathot, the MP Gilles André and Communal Councilor Alain Onkelinx, inaugurated the boulevard; taking advantage of the latest electric bikes and soft mobility options to cut the color ribbon and discover the new atmosphere of the city center.
The Boulevard is designed in such a way that pedestrians and bicycles can move in total safety. Soon, a further 10 electric bikes will be available for the staff of the City Hall.
The focus is on the fact that the new infrastructure is not a simple road but acts as a structuring axis around which a shopping area, businesses and attractive places to live and work have been created and are set to blossom even more in the future. This new central axis should give a new regeneration dynamic across different neighborhoods that are now significantly better connected to each other.
This new Boulevard is truly a centerpiece of the Urban Master Plan, the spinal column to which relates all projects of this ambitious regeneration strategy. It strengthens, supports, making them accessible and connects all the projects to each other.
Funding for implementing the next phases of the works has been confirmed. By 2020, the current section will be extended to the site of the B blast furnace at Ougrée on one side, and in the direction of the Boverie up to the site of the blast furnace 6 on the other one. In a longer term, it will finally be extended to the Val Saint Lambert.
Furthermore, the Master Plan for regeneration of Seraing is the basis for the replication of the REMOURBAN model developed in the lighthouse cities. In this context, the urban boulevard can be considered as an ideal platform to welcome innovative mobility strategies and devices and benefit from the project results.
This achievement, financed by Europe and Wallonia, is a crucial stone in the struggle of Seraing to his regeneration.
