This year during the summer and back-to-school seasons AREBS lead the Reco project which heightens the awareness of the less fortunate in Seraing around the energy efficient and sustainable housings. The project is primarily addressed to younger generations.
During last Summer, activities for children between 6 and 12 have been set up in the seven playgrounds organised throughout the city of Seraing. Through practical and playful activities, children have been sensitized to energy issues: what is energy? Which energy sources are available on the planet? How to save energy? So many questions and issues approached with the children!
At the beginning of the new school year, the project was presented to the local schools of Seraing (public sector). Three schools subscribed and seven classes of 4th, 5th and 6th grades (primary school classes for children between 9 and 12) have benefited from the programme in September, October and November. This programme, named “climate change and energy savings”, is divided into three sessions (of half a day each).
The first session is dedicated to climate change and ecological footprint with the objective of raising the awareness of children: their actions have consequences on the environment, now and in the future. The second session is devoted to the history of different sources of energy, to the notions of fossil and renewable energies as well as to the impact of their consumption on our lifestyles. The third and last session addresses the concept of “rational use of energy” and the importance to preserve our resources.
All in all, more than 280 children from Seraing have been educated to the issues of energy transition and climate change. Those young people are the adults of tomorrow: it is therefore critical to alert them from an early age.
