The meeting was organised by the AREBS and the risk prevention unit from the city of Seraing. In the next five years the Trasenster neighbourhood will be at the centre of attention in terms of urban transformation: renovation and construction of new buildings, improvement of existing road infrastructures and the overall mobility in the area. Thanks to European funds (ERDF) but also regional and local support, a railway line will be renovated, in the framework of the REL (Express network Liège), between Flémalle, through Seraing, all the way to Herstal.
The disused halls from the “ateliers centraux” (central workshops) will partly be renovated in a multimodal car park; the park of Trasenster will be reinstated and made accessible to the residents of the area; as well as the “OM” hall (Ougrée Marihaye) which will be reinstated as a concert hall.
Finally, new buildings will be constructed in order to make Trasenster a new cultural hub, dedicated to art, music, and culture. Some of these new constructions are part of the Master Plan adopted by the city of Seraing and implemented by Eriges; other developments, which function has not been decided yet, will allow for the engagement of citizens and local residents to define, in collaboration with the city, new ideas and address residents’ needs and expectations.
Around thirty residents attended the meeting. Following a presentation by Eriges of the forthcoming projects in the neighbourhood, residents could ask questions, formulate remarks and exchange about future plans and intentions. A puppet show, starring Tchantchès (a very famous character in the region), narrated the history of the neighbourhood and more particularly of the “Reciprocity Welcome to Seraing” project, for the great delight of young and old alike!
Participants could then visit the park of Trasenster, currently closed to the public, as well as the surroundings of the “OM” building, soon to be renovated.
The afternoon in Trasenster was one of the firsts of a series of forthcoming actions and events which will involve residents and local stakeholders in the renovation and changes taking place in Ougrée and which will help build a friendlier neighbourhood, where they can feel fully at home.
