In the occasion of the 125. anniversary of ELMŰ-ÉMÁSZ company (which is one of the key players in the Hungarian energy market), a smart lamp post has been installed on Bartók Béla square in Miskolc, which is available from 21. May 2019. It is not only a simple public lighting device, but it can also use for charging mobile phone and electric bicycle, furthermore it ensures free Wi-Fi access. Thanks to ELMŰ_ÉMÁSZ, soon there will be a parking space in front of the beach of Miskolctapolca, which will be suitable for charging electric cars by solar system. Nowadays, ELMŰ-ÉMÁSZ has the widest network of electric chargers in Hungary, EV chargers have been established and operated more than in 300 lots. In Miskolc, for example, the first EV charger has started its operation in 2012. Marie-Theres Thiell (Chairman of the Board of ELMŰ-ÉMÁSZ), Ákos Kriza (Mayor of Miskolc Municipality), Péter Pfliegler (Vice Mayor of Miskolc Municipality) and Péter Kaderják (State Secretary responsible for Energy and Climate Policy at the Ministry of Innovation and Technology) held speeches about renewable energy developments and their importance during this event. Ákos Kriza, Mayor of Miskolc Municipality has highlighted that Miskolc has become one of the leaders in the use of renewable energies in Hungary: use the possibility of potential biomass and thermal waters, more and more public building use solar energy by installed PV systems, free Wi-Fi access on public transport vehicles, modern fleet of vehicles in public transport or initiatives for fostering smart metering.

Furthermore, Miskolc has received the title of “Energy Efficient Municipality” at the 10. award ceremony of Virtual Power Plant Program on 6. March 2019. The Virtual Power Plant Program is an energy efficiency program whose patron is President of the Hungarian Republic and which has been chosen by the European Commission as the third best EU sustainability initiative. Its aim is to collect, present the energy and carbon-dioxide savings of the partners and share the achievements of these role models. Péter Pfliegler, Vice Mayor of Miskolc Municipality has accepted the award on behalf of Miskolc Municipality, who has reported among others that Miskolc joined the Green City movement in 2011 and since that time lots of energy efficient developments have been applied. Recently, a 1 MW capacity solar power plant has been installed at a re-cultivated landfill in Miskolc. Annually, it produces more than 1 gigawatt hours of electricity, saves nearly one thousand tons of carbon dioxide and supplies seven public institutions with electricity. The vice mayor told to the audience, that the main goal of the municipality to take Miskolc city to a sustainable development path, so in the future, more and more energy efficient activities will be applied in the city.
