After a general diagnostic of the situation, the municipality has been working on an ambitious project of urban regeneration since 2001. This project includes actions towards an improvement of the housing environmental performance, sustainable mobility and development of infrastructures which better the living environment of the population. In coherence with the will for a better urban equilibrium, the municipality has launched in 2009 the operation “Carbon Footprint in Seraing” (website).
The action plan to reduce CO2 emission is implemented through several projects such as ZECOS and REMO-RECO which are two projects financed by the Walloon region aiming at helping citizens to refurbish their house.
Arebs is a local organization dedicated to local economic development. Although it benefits from a multidisciplinary team, it is a generalist support organism aiming at instilling dynamism into Seraing territory by creating network opportunities and developing jobs and creativity boosting projects.
Seraing is a Walloon city located near Liège. It counts 63,000 inhabitants. Its 3,548 hectares are split between residential, industry and forest areas. Up to the 80’s the city economy was relying on the flourishing steel industry. The decline of this industry pushed Seraing to introduce urban requalification, economic dynamism and sustainable growth policies.
Arebs is linked to the city of Seraing and therefore depends on the decisions taken at the city level. It has however a part of independence on decision taken which allow her to react quickly to new challenges and to adapt its strategy when necessary.
